Hacker Sentenced to 5 Years for Twitter Takeover and Bitcoin Theft

Joseph James O’Connor, the hacker responsible for a 2021 Twitter account takeover, has been sentenced to five years in jail and ordered to pay $794,000 for stealing Bitcoin. O’Connor pleaded guilty to extorting the funds through fake Twitter giveaways. He was charged and extradited by US prosecutors, along with British co-conspirator Mason Sheppard. The hack involved offering bogus giveaways from the Twitter accounts of prominent figures such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and President Joe Biden. O’Connor also stalked a 16-year-old girl online and threatened the victim’s family. Despite initially claiming innocence, O’Connor eventually pleaded guilty to several charges. The hack exposed Twitter’s poor cybersecurity and highlighted the risks of cryptocurrency crimes. The involvement of celebrities like Elon Musk and Kim Kardashian-West in cryptocurrency promotions may have contributed to the success of O’Connor’s schemes. The Twitter data breaches and the company’s handling of security issues have raised concerns about its ability to protect user data and restore confidence.
