Crypto Social Network Halts Harvesting of User Data for AI Training in Europe 🌐
A social network popular in the crypto world has decided to suspend its controversial practice of collecting personal data from European users to train its artificial intelligence system, as confirmed by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) recently.
The DPC, acting on behalf of the European Union, released a statement welcoming the social network’s decision to halt processing personal data from the public posts of EU/EEA users. This data was utilized for training its AI system named ‘Grok’ during a specific period earlier this year.
DPC Takes Legal Action Against GDPR Violation
- Irish DPC, in coordination with European regulators, filed an urgent court application citing violations of EU data protection regulations, particularly GDPR.
- DPC chairperson Des Hogan emphasized the ongoing investigation to ensure compliance with GDPR standards.
Commitment to User Rights and Compliance
- The DPC’s proactive measures aim to safeguard the rights and freedoms of X users in the EU and EEA.
- The social network affirmed its cooperation with DPC on AI-related matters, emphasizing their ongoing collaboration since the previous year.
Several European countries have raised concerns about the social network’s data collection practices, prompting criticism from advocacy group NOYB for potential GDPR violations. NOYB argued that the network failed to transparently communicate these practices to users and acquire explicit consent for data collection.
