Head of Compliance at OneCoin Admits Guilt in Multi-Billion Dollar Cryptocurrency Scheme

The Guilty Plea of OneCoin’s Head of Legal and Compliance

Irina Dilkinska, the head of legal and compliance at OneCoin, has pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering. This comes after OneCoin co-founder Karl Sebastian Greenwood was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in a multi-billion dollar crypto pyramid scheme. According to Damian Williams of the U.S. Attorneys office for the South District of New York (SDNY), Dilkinska facilitated the laundering of millions of dollars of illicit profits accrued through OneCoin’s multi-level marketing scheme.

As OneCoin’s so-called ‘Head of Legal and Compliance’ Irina Dilkinska accomplished the exact opposite goal of her position.  As she has now admitted, Dilkinska facilitated the laundering of millions of dollars of illicit profits OneCoin accrued through its multi-level marketing scheme.

Dilkinska’s sentencing is scheduled for February 2024, with a potential prison term of up to 10 years. This is half the sentence issued to Greenwood, who was also fined $300 million for defrauding over three million investors worldwide. Additionally, Mark Scott, another OneCoin executive, was extradited to the U.S. in March 2023 to face similar charges.

The Largest Crypto Scam and Ongoing Investigations

OneCoin is considered one of the largest crypto scams to date, with estimated losses exceeding $25 billion. The project was led by Ruja Ignatova, also known as “cryptoqueen,” who remains on the FBI’s most wanted list. Despite reports claiming she was murdered in November 2018, her whereabouts or state of health remain unknown. Meanwhile, the SDNY continues to bring charges against her former associates and other bad actors within the crypto space.

Hot Take: The Downfall of OneCoin’s Leadership

The guilty plea from OneCoin’s head of legal and compliance further solidifies the downfall of the project’s leadership. With ongoing investigations and prosecutions, it is clear that authorities are committed to holding individuals accountable for their involvement in large-scale crypto scams.
