Helium Mobile Launches Nationwide Plan with Unlimited Data, Text, and Talk for $20/month
Helium Mobile, the self-proclaimed “world’s first cryptocarrier,” has announced the launch of a nationwide plan in the U.S. that offers unlimited data, text, and talk for just $20 per month. The service combines the peer-to-peer Helium Network, which utilizes the Solana blockchain, with a nationwide 5G network. Earlier this year, Helium Mobile conducted a limited trial in Miami. Subscribers can set up their own “mini cell towers” called hotspots to expand the network and eliminate dead zones.
Helium Hotspots
Helium Mobile is offering two types of hotspots: an outdoor hotspot priced at $499 and an indoor one priced at $249. Currently, there are 3,831 active mobile hotspots and 357,087 active hotspots for internet-of-things devices according to the Helium Hotspots Map.
HNT Token Price and Helium Network Background
The price of Helium’s HNT token, used to incentivize hotspot operators supporting the network, experienced a slight increase following the announcement. However, it is still significantly lower than its all-time high in 2021 when it traded over $51 per token. Helium Network was established in 2013 to create a wireless network for internet-of-things devices. It raised $111 million in a 2021 token sale led by Andreessen Horowitz and has received investments from various firms such as Ribbit Capital and Alameda Research. In February 2022, it secured $200 million in a Series D round.
