Astrobotic’s Lunar Mission
A Pittsburgh-based aerospace company, Astrobotic, has unveiled plans to send a physical Dogecoin (DOGE) token to the moon. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Pittsburgh’s North Side, Astrobotic has become a leader in lunar logistics, focusing on making space missions more feasible and affordable. The company is known for its commitment to science, exploration, and commerce in the field of space exploration.
Facilities and Operations
Operating out of a 47,000-square-foot complex, Astrobotic has the largest private facility globally dedicated to lunar logistics. This facility is used for the construction and operation of various space technologies, including landers, rovers, and autonomous spacecraft navigation systems. The Astrobotic Mission Control Center, located within this complex, serves as the nerve center from which payloads are controlled.
Moon Mission Details
The mission is set for December 23, 2023, using the DHL Moonbox service aboard United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur Rocket. This ambitious initiative was funded by the Dogecoin community back in 2015 and marks a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency that started as a meme-inspired digital asset.
Crypto-Centric Lunar Mission
In addition to sending a physical Dogecoin token to the moon, the mission will also transport a physical Bitcoin token as part of an initiative by cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX. This payload also includes a copy of the Genesis Block, the very first block of Bitcoin (BTC) to be mined, commissioned by Bitcoin Magazine.
Dogecoin’s Journey to the Moon
A report by CoinDesk reveals that Dogecoin’s journey to the moon isn’t new. In 2022, there was a plan for a SpaceX mission funded entirely by DOGE tokens to send the cryptocurrency to the lunar surface. Commissioned by Geometric Energy Corp., this mission faced postponement due to unforeseen circumstances but is now rescheduled for a January 2024 launch.
