Hive Digital Expands into AI and HPC Technologies with Nvidia GPU Acquisition

Vancouver-based company, Hive Digital, known for its expertise in bitcoin mining and high-performance computing (HPC), has announced its entry into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) and HPC technologies. As part of this strategic move, the company has acquired 96 Nvidia H100 graphics processing units (GPUs).

Incorporating Nvidia GPUs into HGX Servers

Hive Digital plans to integrate these GPUs into twelve HGX servers, each equipped with eight H100 GPUs featuring SXM connectivity. By doing so, the company aims to improve its existing GPU division, which currently works with 2,600 GPUs in partnership with HPC platforms.

Expanding Beyond Crypto-Mining

Clients will now have access to Hive’s Nvidia GPUs for various timeframes. According to Frank Holmes, executive chairman of Hive, this move represents a shift from exclusive crypto-mining towards a broader strategy encompassing different GPU applications.

A Trend among Bitcoin Mining Companies

Hive Digital’s decision to invest in Nvidia H100 GPUs follows a larger trend among bitcoin mining companies venturing into AI technology. Other companies, such as Northern Data and Iris Energy, have also made similar investments, targeting the growing generative AI market.

Capitalizing on the AI Industry’s Growth

The AI industry has been experiencing significant growth, with billions of dollars invested and a surge in demand for AI technology. Aydin Kilic, CEO of Hive, stated that the newly acquired GPUs are already operational in several locations, including Sweden, Quebec, and Montreal.

The Nuances of GPU Operation for HPC Applications

Kilic explained the differences between operating GPUs for HPC applications compared to crypto mining. While crypto mining focuses on energy efficiency, HPC applications require a robust network and energy infrastructure.

Strategic Deployment of Nvidia GPU Fleet

Hive Digital has strategically deployed its Nvidia GPU fleet. In their Boden data center, around 3,000 GPUs have been repurposed for lighter HPC tasks, while others are dedicated to mining GPU-friendly altcoins.

Hot Take: Hive Digital Expands into AI with Nvidia GPU Acquisition

Hive Digital’s acquisition of 96 Nvidia H100 GPUs marks its entry into the artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) industries. With this move, Hive aims to capitalize on the growing demand for AI technology and expand beyond its crypto-mining roots. By integrating Nvidia GPUs into its servers, Hive plans to enhance its existing GPU division and offer clients access to their GPUs for different timeframes. This aligns with a trend among bitcoin mining companies, such as Northern Data and Iris Energy, who are also venturing into AI technology. The strategic deployment of their Nvidia GPU fleet further demonstrates Hive’s commitment to diversifying its business and becoming an AI infrastructure leader.
