Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson Addresses Controversy Over Hydra Throughput Claims

Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson is facing backlash for his previous statements about the Hydra protocol achieving over 1 million transactions per second (TPS). Critics have accused him of dishonesty and misleading the community. However, Hoskinson has defended himself, stating that all his claims are backed by credible sources.

Hoskinson’s Response on Twitter

In response to the accusations, Hoskinson took to Twitter on October 5th to provide evidence supporting his earlier claim. He shared official source material from 2020, explaining that the 1 million TPS figure was based on a hypothetical scenario where every Stake Pool Operator (SPO) on the Cardano network runs an independent Hydra head. Each head would operate at a speed of 1000 TPS.

Challenging the Traditional TPS Metric

Hoskinson clarified that Cardano’s performance cannot be evaluated solely based on the traditional TPS metric. The Hydra protocol operates differently, focusing on a “transaction per transaction” basis. This renders the TPS metric obsolete in assessing Cardano’s capabilities. Despite this, Cardano continues to handle large NFT drops, DEX transactions, Oracle transactions, and run rich smart contracts.

Comparison with Solana

Hoskinson also compared Cardano to Solana, emphasizing that while Solana boasts high throughput, it comes at the cost of data storage. The Solana network has grown to over 200 terabytes in size due to its emphasis on throughput and may reach a petabyte if it continues this path.

Hoskinson’s Clarification and Importance

Given the misinformation surrounding Hydra, Hoskinson’s clarification was crucial. In the crypto community, founders and researchers are held to high standards, and addressing controversies promptly is essential.

Hot Take: Charles Hoskinson Addresses Criticism Over Hydra Throughput Claims

Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson has responded to criticism regarding his claims about the Hydra protocol’s throughput. Despite accusations of dishonesty, Hoskinson defended himself by providing official source material to support his earlier statements. He explained that the 1 million TPS figure was hypothetical, based on every Stake Pool Operator running an independent Hydra head. Hoskinson also highlighted that Cardano’s performance cannot be evaluated solely using the traditional TPS metric due to the unique nature of the Hydra protocol. Comparing Cardano to Solana, he emphasized the trade-off between high throughput and data storage. Hoskinson’s clarification was crucial in dispelling misinformation surrounding Hydra.
