Improving Bitcoin Ordinals: Bitfinity Introduces Ethereum Virtual Machine on ICP

Bitfinity Raises $7 Million to Integrate Ethereum Virtual Machine with Bitcoin

Bitfinity, a new developer on the Ordinal Inscription protocol, has raised $7 million in funding to integrate its Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with Bitcoin. The company’s goal is to support Bitcoin-enabled DeFi services using a sidechain on the Internet Computer. The funding round was led by Polychain Capital and ParaFi Capital.

Internet Computer and Chain-Key

Internet Computer (ICP) is a blockchain-based computing system that uses a proof of stake algorithm called Threshold Relay. Bitfinity plans to use the Internet Computer’s threshold signature scheme, known as Chain-Key, to enable smart contracts that hold and transfer Bitcoin and Ordinal assets on-chain.

Showcasing Similarities Between Ethereum and Bitcoin

Bitfinity founder Max Chamberlin stated that the project is not meant to replace Bitcoin but rather to showcase that Ethereum and Bitcoin enthusiasts are not so different. He believes that Bitfinity is for everyone and aims to provide a cheaper way to use Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens on the Bitcoin network.

Challenges Ahead

While Bitfinity may offer lower costs and faster speeds, it will need to convince Bitcoin purists and Ordinal enthusiasts to use their platform instead of minting directly on the blockchain. Chamberlin acknowledges that Bitfinity doesn’t change the core ethos of on-chain digital assets but simply makes them cheaper to use.

The Future of Bitfinity

In addition to supporting Ordinals, Bitfinity plans to include BRC-20 tokens in its protocol. The company believes that users will prefer a low-cost side-chain or layer 2 solution like Bitfinity for their transactions, similar to what has been observed with Ethereum. Chamberlin envisions a future where Bitcoin and Ethereum converge through solutions like Bitfinity.
