Instagram Launches AI-Powered Background Editing Feature
Instagram, Meta’s popular photo-sharing app, has introduced a new AI-driven background editing feature called Backdrop. This feature, powered by generative AI technology called Emu Edit, allows users to reimagine the background of their images with just a few taps and prompts.
Unlike simple color filters and basic adjustments, Backdrop offers a range of creative options such as being “chased by dinosaurs” or “surrounded by puppies.” Ahmad Al-Dahle, generative AI lead at Meta, explained that users can tap the Backdrop button at the top of a new Story to get started. Once they’ve posted their edited image, a “Try it” sticker will appear to make it easier for friends to use Backdrop for the first time.
AI Boosting Confidence and Creativity
The goal of this feature is to boost confidence and creativity for Instagram users while inspiring others to try it out. The tool provides suggested prompts like “on a red carpet,” but also allows users to craft their own unique prompts.
This move by Meta follows a trend among social platforms that are integrating AI into their apps at a rapid pace. Snapchat recently introduced similar AI-powered functionalities.
