Opera Mini Launches MiniPay Stablecoin Wallet on Celo Network
Opera Mini, the Android browser developed by Opera, has introduced a new dollar stablecoin wallet called MiniPay on the Celo network. The goal is to attract more users to the web3 space. The MiniPay wallet, weighing 2 megabytes, will initially be available in Nigeria and later expand to Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. Africa was chosen as the launch location due to its poor infrastructure and high unemployment rates, providing an opportunity to offer a more stable way to store and send money using digital assets.
“Users in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa have indicated that even when satisfied with their current payment solutions, there are still lingering concerns about high fees, unreliable service uptimes, a lack of transparency around transaction progress, and mobile data access.”
Jorgen Arnesen, Opera EVP Mobile
The MiniPay wallet allows users to pay gas fees using ERC20 tokens and supports the SocialConnect naming service protocol for mapping wallets to mobile phone numbers. It is uncertain whether Opera plans to release a similar product for its iOS browser. Celo’s CEL token gained over 3% following the announcement.
