Mistral’s AI Chatbot Le Chat Mistral and Partnership with Microsoft
Mistral, a ten-month-old French startup, has recently partnered with technology company Microsoft. This partnership was aimed at competing with top players in the AI industry such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Through this collaboration, Mistral AI gained access to Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and started offering its model on the service.
The primary goal of this partnership is to conduct research, focusing on developing customer-specific models for European clients.
As a result of this strategic partnership, Mistral has launched a Large Language Model (LLM) that bears similarities to OpenAI. This LLM has a simple question-and-answer interface and can understand and translate three different languages. It achieves this through the use of three different LLMs, which are data repositories that enable chatbots to provide conversational answers.
Mistral Large is one of these LLMs, and the company claims that it is the best among the three. They believe that Mistral Large is second only to ChatGPT’s latest version, GPT-4, in terms of reasoning capacity.
Mistral states that its chatbot can understand questions containing up to 20,000 words in English. While this capacity is four times smaller than that of GPT-4 Turbo, it is important to note that Le Chat Mistral is completely free, unlike OpenAI’s GPT-4 which requires a monthly subscription fee of up to $20.
Increasing Competition in the AI Industry
Mistral’s AI chatbot bears similarities to ChatGPT because the startup has been actively seeking ways to challenge OpenAI. Initially, they released their Mistral Small model as open-source and later introduced more models with licensing systems similar to OpenAI.
However, Mistral’s Le Chat is not the only AI tool that has posed a threat to OpenAI’s products. Google recently launched Genie, an AI capable of generating video games from a single image. This highlights how large tech companies are leveraging AI to develop and offer innovative products to users.
