Introducing POL Token Contract on Ethereum by Polygon as a Future MATIC Replacement

Polygon Labs Launches Ethereum Contract for New POL Token

Polygon Labs has recently launched the Ethereum contract for its new token, POL, which is intended to replace the current MATIC token. However, users are not required to exchange their MATIC for POL at this time.

Introduction of POL Token

The new token, known as the Polygon Ecosystem Token, aims to power a wide range of zero-knowledge-based Layer 2 chains. It implements a re-staking protocol that enables token holders to stake it on multiple chains and perform various functions.

Polygon 2.0 Roadmap Implementation

The launch of the POL token paves the way for other components of the Polygon 2.0 roadmap. This includes the introduction of a new staking layer, upgrading the Proof of Stake (PoS) network to zkEVM layer-2, and creating a shared liquidity protocol for all Polygon networks.

Current Usage of POL

Currently, POL is not being utilized within the Polygon network. Staking and gas fees are still performed using the MATIC token. Therefore, there is no need for users, validators, and app developers to exchange their MATIC for POL at this moment.

Polygon’s Development Timeline

Polygon Labs first announced the development of Polygon 2.0 on June 29. The team proposed using a new token called POL on September 14. However, at that time, the token had not been deployed to Ethereum.

Competition in Layer-2 Ecosystems

Polygon’s layer-2 ecosystem will utilize zero-knowledge proofs for transaction validation between networks. It will face competition from Optimism Labs’ Optimism ecosystem, which plans to secure messages between networks using optimistic rollup technology.

Hot Take: Polygon’s POL Token Aims to Revolutionize Layer-2 Chains

Polygon Labs has launched the Ethereum contract for its new token, POL, which is set to replace the existing MATIC token. The introduction of POL will enable a vast ecosystem of zero-knowledge-based Layer 2 chains, revolutionizing the way transactions are validated. This move aligns with Polygon’s roadmap for scaling Ethereum and building the Value Layer of the Internet. While users are not currently required to exchange their MATIC for POL, this development sets the stage for future advancements within the Polygon 2.0 ecosystem. With competition from other layer-2 ecosystems, such as Optimism, Polygon is positioned to drive innovation in the crypto space.
