Matter Labs has released the ZK Stack, a codebase for building networks using zero-knowledge proofs, as part of its vision to create a network of interconnected blockchains. Called Hyperchains, these networks will run on top of the zkSync Era chain, with zkSync Era being the first Hyperchain. The ZK Stack is a toolkit that allows the community to extend the system and work towards the Hyperchain vision. This move signals a competition between two scaling solutions for Ethereum, with Optimism and zkSync taking different approaches. The ZK Stack is released under a MIT/Apache open source license. Matter Labs aims to help more teams understand and contribute to the ZK Stack, with the goal of launching more Hyperchains and empowering the community. Developers building Hyperchains can create Layer 2 or Layer 3 networks depending on their intended purpose. Matter Labs plans to introduce a decentralized sequencer for Hyperchains. Hyperchains can be connected using Hyperbridges, allowing for cross-chain swaps. The ZK Stack offers native account abstraction and claims to make some transaction types, such as oracle updates, cheaper compared to other rollups. The first Hyperchains are expected to go live this year.
