In a shocking turn of events, an investor in WBTC has fallen prey to a well-executed phishing scam, resulting in the loss of more than $71 million worth of WBTC. According to reports from the blockchain security firm CertiK, the investor transferred a substantial amount of 1,155 WBTC to the hacker’s address.
Tactics & Strategies Unveiled 🕵️♂️
The deception in this scam unfolded gradually, with the victim unknowingly triggering scammers by initiating a transfer of 0.05 ETH, thus revealing activity in their wallet. Seizing this opportunity, the scammers created a vanity wallet address that closely resembled the format of the previous transfer. Subsequently, the investor fell victim to the trap and transferred a significant sum of WBTC to the scammer’s address.
After receiving the funds, the exploiter wasted no time in laundering the 1,155 WBTC through various intermediary wallets. The process involved converting the WBTC into Wrapped Ether (WETH) and then exchanging it for 22,956 Ether, which was further distributed across 10 different addresses to obscure the trail and complicate any recovery efforts.
