Japan’s SBI leads $100M funding round for Oxford-based quantum computing spinout

Oxford Quantum Circuits Launches Toshiko Quantum Computing Platform

Oxford University spinout company, Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC), has introduced Toshiko, a 32-qubit quantum computing services platform. OQC claims that Toshiko is the first enterprise-ready quantum computing platform in the world. OQC has partnered with Equinix, Nvidia, Amazon Web Service, and McKinsey to bring quantum computing out of the lab and pave the way for quantum advantage.

What is Quantum Advantage?

Quantum advantage refers to the point at which a quantum computer can solve problems that traditional binary computers cannot solve within a reasonable amount of time. While there have been claims of quantum advantage by companies like Google and IBM, there is currently no consensus in the industry.

Focusing on Enterprise Solutions

As hybrid and cloud-based classical/quantum systems emerge and commercial quantum platforms become available, the focus in the quantum computing sector has shifted towards enterprise solutions. Tim Costa from Nvidia emphasizes the importance of integrating quantum with GPU-accelerated supercomputing to address future challenges.

$100 Million Series B Funding Round

OQC has also announced a $100 million Series B funding round led by SBI Investments. This follows their previous Series A funding round of approximately $43 million. Both rounds represent the largest quantum computing startup funding rounds in UK history.
