Kraken Collaborates with SEROCU to Recover Stolen Cryptocurrency
Kraken, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, worked with the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) in a mission called “Operation Hyphen” to retrieve and return over $2 million worth of stolen cryptocurrency related to a major crypto scam.
Scammer Receives 4 Years In Prison For 10 Million Euro Crypto Heist
An investigation focused on the fraudulent website βiotaseed.io,β which was created by Wybo Wiersma, a 40-year-old individual from the Netherlands. Wiersma allegedly deceived victims by providing a supposed secure platform for generating 81-digit IOTA crypto seeds. However, the seed phrases were predetermined by Wiersma, enabling him to control their tokens without their knowledge.
Between 2017 and 2018, Wiersma transferred more than β¬10 million worth of IOTA tokens from multiple victims to various cryptocurrency trading accounts. He was arrested and sentenced to four and a half years in prison for theft.
SEROCU seized approximately Β£2.37 million in cryptocurrency from an exchange under the Proceeds of Crime Act. During court proceedings, Wiersma was ordered to pay Β£2.1 million, with part of the amount sourced from the seized cryptocurrency. The remaining funds were allocated for restitution to the victims, who numbered between 50 and 60 individuals worldwide.
Kraken Role In Returning Stolen Crypto Funds
To overcome challenges in returning the stolen funds to the victims, SEROCU partnered with Kraken and sought guidance from regulatory authorities. Kraken facilitated the conversion of the recovered crypto assets into GBP in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Detective Inspector Rob Bryant of SEROCUβs Cyber Crime and Cryptocurrency Unit expressed gratitude for Kraken’s collaboration and innovation during the investigation. Assistant Chief Constable Tim Metcalfe commended the partnership between law enforcement and private sector, emphasizing its importance in ensuring justice for victims and deterring criminals.
Lana Sinelnikova, UK Head of Compliance at Kraken, stressed the significance of maintaining robust security protocols and compliance standards within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
