Peter Szilagyi Expresses Frustration Over Lack of Interest from Alma Mater
Peter Szilagyi, the team lead of Ethereum, has expressed frustration over his alma mater’s lack of interest in providing opportunities for students to collaborate with Ethereum (ETH). In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Szilagyi explained that he had always felt a lack of genuine interest when he returned to his old university to deliver talks about Ethereum.
Students Focused on Price Rather Than Project
Szilagyi stated that the students appeared to be more focused on the price of Ethereum rather than the project itself. He noted that the audience seemed to be stuck in the “number go up” aspect and that the organizers used it as an ad campaign.
Lack of Awareness About Grant Funding
This year, Szilagyi organized a grant for 9 students to participate in Devconnect, including flights and accommodation. However, he claims that the students are not aware of who is funding the initiative. He stated that they had no clue where the grant came from.
No Response from University
Szilagyi reached out to his old university contacts, including the person through whom he obtained the grant, to recommend students for potential collaboration. However, the university neglected to respond to his emails, leaving him in the dark about the outcome.
Growing Demand for Crypto and Blockchain Courses
Recent reports suggest a growing demand for crypto and blockchain courses in universities. Blue-chip firms like Oracle, Amazon, and Google have actively hired individuals with crypto and blockchain knowledge to develop blockchain products. Information systems students are also showing increased interest in learning about decentralized applications.
Hot Take: Ethereum’s Influence on Education
It is disheartening to see that even the team lead of Ethereum is facing a lack of interest from his own alma mater in providing opportunities for students to collaborate with the project. This highlights a disconnect between academia and the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. Universities should embrace and support initiatives like grants and collaborations to foster innovation and educate the next generation of blockchain professionals. Failure to do so may result in missed opportunities for students and hinder the growth and adoption of this transformative technology.
