Larry David’s Reflection on the FTX Super Bowl Commercial: Regretfully, I Made the Decision

Larry David Regrets FTX Super Bowl Ad: ‘I Did It Like an Idiot’

Well-known TV creator Larry David, known for shows like “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” recently expressed his remorse over appearing in a Super Bowl advertisement for the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which later went bankrupt. At the premiere of the final season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” David admitted that he made a misguided decision to endorse FTX.

Before doing the ad, I sought advice from knowledgeable friends, asking if there was anything wrong with it. They assured me it was fine… So like an idiot, I did it.

The controversial commercial, aired during the 2022 Super Bowl, showed David parodying famous inventions and expressing skepticism towards FTX. However, FTX’s bankruptcy filing in November revealed accounting discrepancies and led to a class-action lawsuit against the exchange and its celebrity endorsers, including David, Tom Brady, and Shaquille O’Neal.

David mentioned being part of the lawsuit and suffering financial losses due to having part of his salary paid in cryptocurrency. While it’s been reported that David received $10 million for the ad, the exact payment method remains unconfirmed.

Legal action against FTX is ongoing, with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals recently ordering an independent examination of the exchange. FTX’s founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, has also been charged with federal fraud and conspiracy, awaiting sentencing in March.
