Lightning Network Developer Clarifies Exposed Vulnerability Is No ‘Intentional Backdoor’
A recent vulnerability exposed in Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, a scaling layer, has been clarified by security researcher and developer Antoine Riard. Riard addressed the issue of social media reports calling the vulnerability an “intentional backdoor” and emphasized that it has been known since 2022. He stated that the security flaws are not intentional and do not question the competence of the Bitcoin and Lightning development community.
Riard also highlighted that while there are mitigations in place to protect against simple or medium attacks, more sophisticated attacks would require preparation and sufficient peer-to-peer and mempool knowledge. He suggested that changes at the bitcoin base layer might be necessary to effectively address the problem.
