Luxury Car Manufacturer Ferrari Embraces Bitcoin and Ether for Payments

Ferrari to Accept Cryptocurrency Payments for Luxury Cars

Italian luxury car manufacturer Ferrari has announced that it will now accept cryptocurrency as a payment option for its vehicles. The decision was made in response to demand from dealers and the market. Initially, this new payment option will be available in the United States, with plans to expand to Europe in the first quarter of 2024.

Enrico Galliera, Ferrari’s chief marketing and commercial officer, explained that including cryptocurrency as a payment option allows the company to connect with potential clients who are already crypto investors. These potential customers include both young investors who have made their fortunes through cryptocurrencies and more traditional investors looking to diversify their portfolios.

Crypto Payment Options

Ferrari will initially support purchases made with Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), the two largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. The company also plans to accept stablecoin USDC and has partnered with cryptocurrency payment processor Bitpay for its initial phase in the US. Bitpay will convert cryptocurrency payments into fiat currency immediately to mitigate volatility and ensure that the funds come from legitimate sources.

Galliera emphasized that there will be no surcharges or additional fees for making payments with cryptocurrency. However, he did not disclose the expected number of cars to be sold through this new payment method.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

Ferrari’s decision to accept cryptocurrency aligns with its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030. Galliera highlighted how cryptocurrencies have reduced their carbon footprint through software upgrades and increased use of renewable resources.

This move follows Tesla’s previous acceptance of Bitcoin as a payment option for its vehicles, which was later suspended due to environmental concerns. Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that BTC payments would resume if miners’ clean energy usage reached 50%. Since then, speculation has arisen about whether Tesla will reintroduce BTC payments.
