Neon Machine Raises $20 Million for Web3 Game Shrapnel

Web3 gaming developer Neon Machine has secured $20 million in Series A funding for the development of its highly anticipated extraction shooter game, Shrapnel. This funding round comes after a previous seed round of $10.5 million completed in June 2021. Leading the round was Polychain Capital, with participation from Griffin Gaming Partners, Brevan Howard Digital, Franklin Templeton, IOSG Ventures, and Tess Ventures.

Shrapnel: An Ambitious AAA Game

Neon Machine describes Shrapnel as an AAA game, which refers to video games with high production value, budgeting, and marketing. The game is a first-person shooter with multiplayer components. In Shrapnel, players will need to escape with any loot they find in-game to retain those items. The gameplay footage and documentation available suggest similarities to Call of Duty: Warzone.

The Integration of Web3 and Blockchain

What sets Shrapnel apart from other AAA games is its integration of Web3 and blockchain technology. While other games have extraction mechanics, the assets in Shrapnel are connected to the blockchain, giving players full ownership over them. Additionally, the game will feature a modding toolset that allows players and developers to incorporate other blockchain assets into the game world.

Upcoming Testing and Release

Neon Machine plans to conduct early-access testing for paid subscribers in December 2022. After this evaluation period, the company intends to launch the game as a free-to-play title sometime in 2024. Alongside the development and launch of Shrapnel, Neon Machine also plans to license its Web3 developer’s API platform, GameBridge.

Hot Take: Neon Machine Raises $20 Million for Web3 Game Shrapnel

Neon Machine’s successful funding round of $20 million for the development of Shrapnel demonstrates the growing interest and investment in Web3 gaming. By integrating blockchain technology, the game offers players full ownership over their in-game assets, setting it apart from traditional AAA games. With its modding toolset and potential for incorporating other blockchain assets, Shrapnel opens up new possibilities for seasonal competitions and tournament play. The upcoming early-access testing and subsequent free-to-play release show promise for the game’s future success. Neon Machine’s plans to license its Web3 developer’s API platform further highlight its commitment to advancing the Web3 gaming ecosystem.
