New Guaranteed Income Programs Launch on the West Coast
Two state-funded programs in California are set to give away a total of $5.94 million to 300 people over an 18-month period. San Francisco will grant 150 participants $1,200 per month, while Ventura County will provide $1,000 per month to 150 participants. The funds are focused solely on supporting foster youth and have been granted by the State of California to disrupt poverty, advance equity, and support the basic needs of recipients.
According to a press release from the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom, in collaboration with the Department of Social Services, these guaranteed income programs aim to level the playing field for former foster youth and give them the support and resources they need to pursue their California dream. These programs may help disrupt the cycle of poverty for foster youth transitioning out of the foster care system.
California’s programs join dozens of similar pilots across the country, including St. Louis, Missouri, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Fairfax County, Virginia, and dozens more.
