From Hockey Player to Crypto Entrepreneur

In the world of sports, there is a common trend that athletes struggle to find their identity after retirement. To avoid this, Nikolaj Rosenthal diversified his career early on, transitioning from a professional hockey player to a crypto entrepreneur.

Rosenthal recognized the challenges of making money post-retirement in the sports industry, prompting him to return to Europe from the US to pursue studies at the Copenhagen Business School. His journey into the world of crypto began in 2016 when he delved deep into the space through Danish Bitcoin entrepreneur Niklas Nikolajsen.

His decision to accept Bitcoin as his salary in 2017, despite the skepticism surrounding cryptocurrencies at the time, eventually proved to be a wise move, inspiring other athletes to follow suit.

Reflecting on his early days in crypto, Rosenthal acknowledged that what may seem normal now was considered “early” back then. He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities in the crypto space, as newcomers today could be perceived as early adopters by future entrants in the industry.

The Dominance of Ethereum

Rosenthal later co-founded Myrmidon in 2022, a non-custodial staking provider with a primary focus on Ethereum. Despite the emergence of competing layer-1 blockchains like Solana and Avalanche, Rosenthal believes that Ethereum still maintains its position as the dominant L1 chain in the crypto ecosystem.

Since his last appearance on the Cryptonews Podcast in 2021, Rosenthal noted Ethereum’s successful upgrades, emphasizing the platform’s resilience and adaptability. However, he highlighted the misconception surrounding upgrades, with some users expecting changes that weren’t intended to address specific issues like high fees on the Ethereum network.

Rosenthal attributed the recent negative sentiment towards Ethereum to historical patterns, noting the inverse relationship between ETH’s performance and Bitcoin’s price rally. He also discussed the significance of ETF approvals for crypto adoption, despite his personal indifference towards them.

According to Rosenthal, Ethereum’s competitive advantage lies in its robust ecosystem and network effects, making it challenging for any existing or emerging competitor to match its current status.

Advocating for True Ownership in Crypto

Delving deeper into the discussion of ETFs, Rosenthal highlighted the inherent conflict between traditional financial products like ETFs and the core ethos of cryptocurrency. While acknowledging the convenience of ETFs for mainstream investors, he emphasized their contradiction with the fundamental purpose of crypto – enabling individuals to custody their assets and retain full control.

To address this issue, Myrmidon developed a non-custodial solution, the Ethereum Staking Dashboard, allowing users to stake their ETH without relinquishing ownership. By maintaining control over their keys and earning yields, stakers can participate in the network securely while upholding the principles of decentralization.

Rosenthal underscored the importance of self-custody in crypto, distinguishing Myrmidon’s approach from centralized exchanges that pose security risks. He emphasized the need for user-friendly interfaces to facilitate ETH staking and ensure a seamless experience for users.

Despite the challenges of requiring 32 ETH for native staking, Rosenthal affirmed Myrmidon’s commitment to non-custodial practices, highlighting the risks associated with centralized staking providers in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Exploring the Four Staking Categories

Rosenthal elaborated on the four staking categories – solo home staking, staking-as-a-service, pooled staking, and centralized staking – outlining their respective advantages and disadvantages. Solo home staking, the most decentralized and secure option, offers higher rewards but demands extensive knowledge and effort from users.

Staking-as-a-service, exemplified by Myrmidon, provides a decentralized staking solution for ETH holders, requiring basic wallet operation skills. Pooled staking is popular for its accessibility but entails smart contract risks and centralization concerns.

Centralized staking, the easiest yet riskiest option, delegates staking responsibilities to exchanges at the cost of asset control and reduced yields. Rosenthal emphasized the varying degrees of security, decentralization, and rewards associated with each staking category, underscoring the importance of informed decision-making for users.

Expansion Beyond Ethereum

While Myrmidon has primarily focused on Ethereum, Rosenthal revealed plans to support additional chains in 2024, expanding the platform’s network offerings. Following the successful launch of Cardano delegation services, Myrmidon aims to provide staking solutions for new networks throughout the year.

Rosenthal highlighted the platform’s in-house infrastructure and commitment to customer-centric growth, ensuring support for networks with existing user demand to maximize operational efficiency and security.
