OpenSea Responds to Accusations of Former Employee’s Involvement in AnubisDAO Rug Pull

OpenSea, a nonfungible token (NFT) platform, has addressed accusations on social media that its former head of ventures, Kevin Pawlak, was involved in the AnubisDAO rug pull in 2021. The anonymous account NFT Ethics tagged OpenSea in a Twitter thread, asking for a response to the allegations against Pawlak. Both NFT Ethics and blockchain analytics account Lookonchain claimed that Pawlak, under the pseudonymous identity “0xSisyphus,” played a role in hyping the AnubisDAO project and laundering funds through the memecoin Pepe. OpenSea stated that Pawlak left the company in June 2023 and had no involvement with the projects in question.

AnubisDAO Rug Pull and Doubts About Accusations

In October 2021, AnubisDAO raised $60 million worth of Ether (ETH) from investors. However, the funds were sent to different wallet addresses, resulting in a loss for the investors. ZachXBT, a blockchain sleuth, expressed skepticism about the accusations against Pawlak. He stated that many assumptions were made without sufficient evidence and pointed out that 0xSisyphus had offered a bounty to identify the wallet address responsible for draining the pool. ZachXBT also mentioned two pseudonymous users known as “Beerus” and “Ersan” as likely responsible for the loss of funds during the AnubisDAO scandal.

Hot Take: OpenSea Denies Knowledge of Former Employee’s Involvement

OpenSea has denied any knowledge of its former employee’s involvement in the AnubisDAO rug pull. The company stated that Pawlak had a limited scope while at OpenSea and that the alleged incidents took place before his time with the company. Blockchain sleuth ZachXBT also expressed doubts about the accusations, highlighting the lack of concrete evidence. While the accusations raise concerns about the integrity of the NFT space, it is crucial to rely on verified information and evidence before making judgments. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold and if any further investigations or actions will be taken.
