Pectra Upgrade and EIP 7732 Discussed by Ethereum Developers in Latest Core Call ✨

ACDE Call #194 Highlights 😎

On August 15, 2024, Ethereum protocol developers gathered virtually for All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #194, led by Ethereum Foundation (EF) Researcher Alex Stokes. These bi-weekly meetings focus on coordinating changes to the Ethereum execution layer (EL).

Pectra Upgrade and Devnets

The meeting kicked off with updates on the progress of the Pectra upgrade. Key discussion points included the readiness of EOF code changes for inclusion in a Pectra devnet and an analysis of gas costs for EIP 2537 operations. Developers also noted issues with Teku/Erigon nodes and the Prysm client on Pectra Devnet 2. The goal is to launch Pectra Devnet 3 with updated EIP 7702 specifications in two weeks, followed by the addition of EOF in Pectra Devnet 4.

  • EF Developer Operations Engineer Parithosh Jayanthi provided insights on gas costs for EIP 2537.
  • Marius van der Wijden presented updated gas cost analysis for EIP 2537.

EIP 7732

Prysm developer “Potuz” shared insights on EIP 7732, a proposal to separate proposer builders on Ethereum. This proposal aims to eliminate the need for relays post-Merge, allowing validators to earn MEV more trustlessly. Potuz emphasized that this design does not require EL or Engine API changes and is compatible with inclusion lists for validators.

Reducing Pre-Merge Tech Debt

Developers discussed proposals to eliminate outdated parts of the Ethereum codebase post-Merge. Erigon developer Giulio Rebuffo proposed removing the “totalDifficulty” field from the Execution API to reduce technical debt. Geth developer Marius van der Wijden suggested removing pre-Merge fields and messages from the Ethereum Wire Protocol to enhance node performance and reduce bandwidth during sync.

PeerDAS Proposal

Nimbus developer “Dustin” suggested expediting the rebase of PeerDAS on top of Pectra EIPs instead of continuing development on Deneb. The proposal involves rebasing PeerDAS on stable Pectra EIPs while excluding unstable ones like EIP 7702 and EOF. This direction received general support from the participants. Stokes also announced a recurring Pectra testing call starting next Monday at 2 PM (UTC) to further coordinate on devnet specifications and timing.

EIP 4444 Updates

No significant updates were reported on EIP 4444, which focuses on history expiry. Nethermind and Nimbus teams are working on their integrations with the Portal Network, an alternative protocol for accessing expired history data.
