Bitcoin Core Developer Proposes Bug Fix to Alleviate Network Congestion
Bitcoin Core developer Luke Dashjr has suggested a bug fix to address the network congestion caused by new Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens. According to Dashjr, these tokens are exploiting a vulnerability in the Bitcoin Core code, resulting in a flood of transactions that spam the blockchain.
The Vulnerability in Bitcoin Core Code
Dashjr explained that since 2013, users have been able to set limits on the size of additional data in transactions. However, inscriptions used by Ordinals and BRC-20 creators can bypass this limit by disguising their data as program code. The latest update to Bitcoin Knots, a Bitcoin Core derivative, has addressed this bug allowing inscriptions to surpass the data size limit.
No More Ordinals or BRC-20 Tokens
Dashjr confirmed that once the vulnerability is fixed, Ordinals and BRC-20 tokens will no longer be viable. Existing inscriptions will remain intact. Dashjr hopes the vulnerability will be resolved before the upcoming v26 release of Bitcoin Core.
Dashjr’s Criticism of Ordinals
Dashjr has been a vocal critic of Ordinals inscriptions, stating that they have caused substantial and irreversible damage to Bitcoin and its users. He believes Ordinals were never authorized and have been an attack on Bitcoin since their inception.
Increased Network Congestion
The influx of inscriptions and minting of BRC-20 tokens has led to heightened congestion on the Bitcoin network. With over 275,000 unconfirmed transactions, the network is facing increased congestion and rising transaction costs.
Controversy Surrounding Ordinals
Ordinals have sparked controversy within the Bitcoin community. Critics argue that Ordinals could price out actual financial activity and damage Bitcoin’s image as a reliable P2P payments network. Supporters, on the other hand, believe it can attract more people and expand the use cases of the Bitcoin network.
