Scammers Pretending to be Journalists to Trick Crypto Users
As the crypto industry continues to expand, scammers are becoming more sophisticated in their attempts to steal digital assets. A recent case exposed fraudsters posing as journalists to gain the trust of their victims.
Fake Journalist Scam
Blockchain security firm SlowMist uncovered a scheme in which a swindler attempted to hijack accounts on the crypto social network friend.tech by pretending to be a journalist. The scammer tried to trick users into downloading malicious files, as reported by SlowMist’s team in a Medium post on November 13.
User Masiwei reported a scam attempt targeting friend.tech for account theft. He had been communicating with someone claiming to be a journalist at Forbes for two hours and was asked to verify his identity through a link. Masiwei sent the link to SlowMist, and its security team identified a malicious JavaScript code in it.
The attacker aimed to trick users into adding the link as a bookmark, laying the groundwork for future malicious activities. After this discovery, SlowMist issued a security alert.
