Proton Mail Pilots Blockchain-Based Email Verification Feature
Proton Mail, a Swiss end-to-end email provider, is testing a new blockchain-based feature to enable users to verify email addresses. The Key Transparency product aims to combat cyberattacks, such as the “man-in-the-middle” attack, by comparing users’ public keys to ensure emails reach the intended recipients. Proton CEO Andy Yen emphasized that the feature is not related to cryptocurrency but rather a “pure form” of blockchain technology.
The feature is currently in beta on Proton’s private blockchain network, with the possibility of moving to a public blockchain like Ethereum in the future. Yen did not provide a specific timeline for the product’s launch.
Proton Mail’s Uncertainty with Cryptocurrencies
In late 2022, Proton CEO Andy Yen expressed uncertainty about the company’s crypto reserves, questioning whether they should continue holding crypto on their balance sheet. Despite this uncertainty, Proton Mail has been holding Bitcoin since 2017 and still accepts crypto as a payment method.
