You Won’t Believe This Crime
Chinese authorities recently achieved a major victory in the fight against economic crimes by successfully extraditing a suspect from Thailand. The suspect, Zhang Moumou, is believed to be the mastermind behind a massive $14 billion pyramid scheme involving cryptocurrencies. This extradition marks a historic moment in the collaboration between the two countries to combat financial fraud and illegal activities.
Successful Extradition Operation
China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) made the announcement of Zhang Moumou’s extradition from Thailand under the “Operation Fox Hunt.” This operation involved coordination between the Chinese embassy in Thailand, Thai law enforcement, the MPS, and other relevant departments to ensure the safe return of the suspected criminal to China.
The extradition took place on a Tuesday evening, representing the first extradition of an economic crime suspect from Thailand to China since the two countries established an extradition treaty in 1999. Zhang had managed to evade capture from 2020 until 2022, making his apprehension a significant achievement for authorities.
Zhang is accused of orchestrating a large-scale crypto pyramid scheme that impacted millions of individuals, leading to his classification as a “major economic crime suspect” by law enforcement agencies. His extradition underscores the commitment of both countries to combat financial crimes and uphold justice on an international level.
The $14 Billion Scam
According to reports, Zhang was the mastermind behind the MBI Group, an organization that operated an online crypto pyramid scheme starting from 2012. The scheme enticed users with promises of high returns on their crypto investments, luring them into the fraudulent operation.
- MBI required participants to pay membership fees ranging from 700 Yuan to 245,000 Yuan, equivalent to $98 to $34,300.
- Members were incentivized to recruit new users, with their earnings linked to the number of new members brought in and the amount invested by these individuals.
Through this deceptive scheme, MBI managed to defraud over 10 million victims between 2012 and 2019, with the total funds involved exceeding 100 billion Yuan, equivalent to around $14 billion. The magnitude of the fraud attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies, triggering an investigation into Zhang’s illicit activities.
Legal Pursuit and Extradition
In 2020, the Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau initiated an investigation into Zhang’s criminal activities, eventually leading to the issuance of a red notice alert by the Chinese National Central Bureau of Interpol in 2021. This notice highlighted Zhang as a fugitive wanted for his involvement in the massive crypto fraud.
Thai authorities apprehended Zhang on July 21, 2022, after he had been on the run for two years. Subsequently, Chinese officials filed an extradition request under the established treaty, which was approved by Thailand’s Court of Appeal in May 2024.
Thailand’s government endorsed the court’s decision on August 14, officially ending the international manhunt for Zhang on August 20, 2024. This successful extradition showcases the dedication of both nations to combat financial crimes and ensure that perpetrators of such fraud are brought to justice.
