Ray Youssef: From MMA Fighter to Crypto Entrepreneur
Rather than a typical tech nerd, Ray Youssef is a 2-meter-tall, adventurous individual who once dabbled in MMA. He emigrated from Egypt to New York at a young age and began working odd jobs at the age of 8. After studying history in college, Youssef became enamored with coding and landed a job as a software engineer. However, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own businesses.
The Rollercoaster Ride of Entrepreneurship
Youssef experienced both success and failure throughout his entrepreneurial journey. While his coupon and ringtones businesses had mixed results, it was during this time that he embarked on a life-changing trip to Egypt to join the revolution. This experience prompted him to delve deeper into the concept of money, eventually leading him back to Bitcoin.
Finding Purpose with Bitcoin
Youssef’s encounter with Bitcoin at a meetup in 2013 sparked his interest in how it could empower individuals. He teamed up with Artur Schaback, and together they founded Paxful, a platform where people could trade Bitcoin for gift cards. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, including homelessness and fasting for guidance, Youssef’s determination paid off.
