Nintendo to Shut Down Online Functionality for 3DS and Wii U Consoles
Nintendo has announced that it will be discontinuing broad online functionality for its previous-generation 3DS handheld and Wii U console. The shutdown, scheduled for early April 2024, will affect multiplayer options, online rankings, and other features that require internet usage. However, users will still be able to play games that do not require an internet connection.
Exemptions for Pokémon Bank Feature
While most online services will be terminated, Nintendo has stated that the Pokémon Bank feature in Pokémon Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon, Sun, and Moon games will continue to function. The Poké Transporter, which supports titles like Pokémon Gold and Silver, will also remain operational.

StreetPass Feature and Future Support
Nintendo’s StreetPass feature, which allows 3DS players to interact with nearby users through messaging and gameplay, will still be available after the online services shutdown. This feature relies on local communication and does not require internet services. However, SpotPass, Nintendo’s wireless hotspot and LAN feature, will no longer function.
Moving Towards Console Sunsetting
