Five Arrested in Thailand for $76 Million Crypto and Gold Scam
Thai authorities have arrested five individuals for allegedly defrauding victims out of millions of dollars through a crypto and gold investment scheme. The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) reported that four Chinese nationals and one Lao citizen were apprehended in connection with the $76 million scam.
Fake Website Promoted Crypto Investing
The suspects are accused of operating a fake website that advertised crypto investments. According to CCIB spokesman Kissana Phathanacharoen, over 3,000 people fell victim to the scam, with victims coming forward starting in November 2022. The victims claimed they had been deceived into investing in gold and crypto assets like Tether (USDT).
Arrests Made for Transnational Crimes
The five suspects were arrested on charges of colluding to commit transnational crimes, money laundering, public fraud, and inputting false information into computer systems. However, their identities have not been disclosed. Authorities also seized more than $16 million worth of properties belonging to the suspects on September 4th.
Life Savings Lost in the Scheme
Many victims invested their life savings into the fraudulent scheme, with some even resorting to taking out second mortgages on their homes or properties. Strangers or foreigners approached many of the victims, inviting them to invest through online platforms or mobile apps from other countries. These fraudsters promised high returns in a short period.
