Resignation of Ripple’s CFO Amid Ongoing SEC Lawsuit

Ripple CFO Joins Maven Clinic

Kristina Campbell, the former chief financial officer of Ripple, has left the crypto payments platform to take up a similar position at virtual healthcare provider Maven Clinic. Campbell’s employment at Ripple ended in October after more than two years with the company. She joined Ripple in April 2021, following her tenure as CFO at payments platform PayNearMe.

A New Challenge in Healthcare

In an October 7 post on LinkedIn, Campbell expressed her excitement about entering the healthcare industry, acknowledging its complexity and heavy regulation. While she did not provide specific reasons for leaving Ripple, she referred to her time at the crypto firm as “memorable.”

Ripple’s Legal Battle

Notably, Campbell’s departure from Ripple coincides with the ongoing legal battle between the company and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The dispute, which began in December 2020, centers around the sale of Ripple’s XRP token. In July, a federal judge ruled that XRP was not a security when sold to retail investors. This ruling was later upheld in October after an appeal from the SEC.

Upcoming Trials in the Crypto Space

Ripple’s trial with the SEC is set to commence in April 2024. This trial will coincide with other high-profile cases affecting the crypto industry, such as the second criminal trial of former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried in March 2024 and the trial of former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky in September 2024.

Possible Regulatory Scrutiny

While it remains unclear whether Campbell’s departure is related to regulatory scrutiny faced by Ripple in the U.S., CEO Brad Garlinghouse has previously advised startups to avoid operating in the country. However, CTO David Schwartz has expressed optimism, stating that the regulatory uncertainty in the U.S. is gradually changing.

Hot Take: Ripple CFO Joins Maven Clinic

Kristina Campbell, the former CFO of Ripple, has left the company to take on a comparable role at Maven Clinic. Her departure comes at a crucial time as Ripple faces an ongoing legal battle with the SEC. Campbell’s move to the healthcare industry signifies a new challenge for her.
