Resumption of Solana Services Following 5-Hour Interruption

Solana Network Resumes Operations After Minor Disruption

Operations on the Solana network have resumed following a minor disruption on Tuesday. The outage lasted for approximately 5 hours, starting at 09:53 UTC. The Solana team is currently investigating the root cause of the issue and will provide a report soon.

Solana’s Native Token Dips During Outage

After the outage, Solana’s native token SOL briefly dropped to around $93.63 before recovering. It is currently trading at approximately $95.41.

Solana’s History of Outages

The recent incident on February 6th was the first outage experienced by the Solana network this year. However, in 2022, the network faced 22 instances of downtime or disruptions.

Explanation of the Outage

The outage was caused by a failure in a mechanism called the “Berkley Packet Filter” (BPF), which is used to deploy, upgrade, and execute programs on Solana. This failure was related to a previous Solana Improvement Proposal (SMID) that introduced changes to the BPF.

Core Software Update to Address the Issue

To resolve the problem, developers are rewriting the BPF code lines on the development network and updating the core software used by all participants on the Solana network. Once this update is implemented and tested, regular operations can resume.

Anticipated DeFi Activity After Restart

Matthew Siegel, VanEck’s head of digital assets research, believes that there will be increased DeFi activity and opportunities for arbitrage bots once the Solana network restarts.

Hot Take: Solana Network Resumes Operations After Service Disruption

Following a 5-hour disruption, the Solana network is back online. The outage was caused by a failure in the Berkley Packet Filter mechanism, which has now been addressed through a core software update. Solana’s native token briefly dipped during the outage but has since recovered. This incident highlights the need for ongoing monitoring and improvements to ensure the stability and reliability of blockchain networks. As Solana continues to grow its DeFi ecosystem, it will be crucial to address any technical issues promptly to maintain user confidence and participation in the network.
