Insights into the Italian Crypto Landscape for 2024 🌍

This year, a significant shift in the landscape of cryptocurrency users in Italy has been identified. A report from the Politecnico di Milano’s Observatory on Blockchain & Web3 indicates a notable interest among the population in crypto-related technologies. Explore the key findings pertaining to cryptocurrency ownership, market trends, and investment preferences among Italians.

Crypto User Landscape in Italy for 2024 📊

The latest analysis from the Politecnico di Milano reveals intriguing statistics about the Italian crypto user base. There are approximately 13 million individuals in Italy expressing interest in cryptocurrencies during 2024.

Delving deeper into the data, roughly 2.7 million Italians currently possess cryptocurrencies—making up about 7% of the internet-using demographic aged between 18 and 75. However, this reflects an 11% decline from the previous year when the number was recorded at 3.6 million.

Among the current cryptocurrency holders, a significant 85% indicated that their crypto investments amount to less than 5,000 euros. More specifically, 57% of participants reported that their holdings are valued at below 1,000 euros.

Exploring investment strategies further, the report highlighted that 65% of Italian crypto holders allocate only 10% of their overall investment portfolios to cryptocurrencies. In contrast, just 15% of users invest approximately 30% of their portfolios in crypto assets.

When it comes to future crypto acquisitions, there’s been a noticeable dip in enthusiasm. Interest has fallen from 20% in 2023 to 17% in 2024. Conversely, those who previously held cryptocurrencies increased slightly from 10% to 11%.

Stability in the Italian Blockchain & Web3 Market 📈

The observation continues with insights into the status of the Blockchain & Web3 market in Italy, indicating a fairly stable environment for cryptocurrencies and related technologies. According to the report, the market value for 2024 stands at approximately 40 million euros, showing a 5% increase from 2023.

The financial and insurance sector dominates, accounting for 49% of market activity, with the real estate sector following at 9%, and logistics and automotive holding 4% of the market share.

Interestingly, Italian companies and startups appear hesitant to invest significantly in these technologies, presenting potential risks of lagging behind in global advancements.

Valeria Portale, the Director of the Observatory on Blockchain & Web3, mentioned that while 2024 may seem stagnant in the blockchain sector, it reflects a phase much like the formative years of the internet. The current lack of a “killer application” has hampered explosion into widespread adoption. She noted that while cryptocurrencies lead in application use, the underlying technology offers broader possibilities.

Giacomo Vella, also from the Observatory, conveyed that the Italian market is currently navigating a slowdown phase, yet retains numerous unfulfilled opportunities. He emphasized the necessity for enhanced discussions around market advancements, intending to cultivate a favorable environment for innovation.

Investment Preferences of Italians in 2024 📉

The findings illustrate that the majority of Italian investors gravitate towards technology stocks, particularly companies like NVIDIA, as their preferred investment strategy.

In the exchange-traded fund (ETF) category, the iShares Edge MSCI World Quality ETF (Acc) garnered the most interest among Italian investors for the year. For those focusing on European stocks, Fusion Fuel Green emerged as a prominent choice in trading activities.

On average, the investment portfolios of Italians in 2024 consisted of approximately 59% allocated to American and European stocks, 38% in ETFs, and a mere 4% invested in bonds.

Compared to other nations in Europe, Italy has significantly experienced a booming growth of traders engaging in active trading, recording a remarkable year-on-year increase of 470%.

Overall, the data beneath this year’s patterns illustrates an evolving crypto and investment landscape. As users venture further into blockchain technologies, the cautious yet notable changes indicate the dynamics of engaging with digital assets are still very much in progress.
