Xahau Launches with Proposal for XRPL Amendment
Xahau, a new smart contract sidechain, is preparing to launch and is working on improving interoperability with the XRP Ledger. Richard AH, the Chief Technology Officer of XRPL Labs, has suggested making an amendment to XRPL’s mainnet to achieve this goal. According to Richard, the current XRP mainnet does not support reversed Burn2Mint for issued currencies. By amending the protocol, it would be possible to move wrapped XRP in both directions between the XRP mainnet and Xahau sidechain.
Potential Benefits of the Amendment
Richard believes that this amendment could also make the wrapped XRP counter-party free if it is done through a transactor on the mainnet. This change could increase the value of XRP on the Xahau chain. The native token of Xahau is XRP+, which is created by burning XRP on the mainnet and receiving XRP+ through the Burn2Mint portal.
Interoperability Challenges
Despite being a fork of the XRP Ledger, there are still interoperability issues between Xahau and the XRP Ledger. The XRP+ token cannot be used on the XRP Ledger even when wrapped. Richard points out that while both chains are connected, they do not share the same standard protocol. The XRP+ uses the XLS35 standard protocol with a built-in metadata standard, which is not desired on the mainnet.
Ripple’s CTO Raises Concerns
David Schwartz, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, questioned Richard about the possibility of moving issued XRP+ tokens back to the mainnet. He also expressed concerns about implementing Burn2Mint on both the XRP Ledger and Xahau chain, as it may be difficult for the XRPL to track Burn2Mint on the Xahau chain. Schwartz also highlighted the challenge of deciding which side of a potential fork should continue implementing Burn2Mint on the mainnet.
Proposed Amendment and Mainnet Politics
Richard has offered to draft an XLS proposal on how the reversed Burn2Mint for issued currencies would work. However, he anticipates pushback from mainnet validators due to the “mainnet politics” involved in passing such amendments. Validators play a role in voting on technical disputes and proposed amendments to the XRPL mainnet. Currently, they are voting on implementing a novel AMM design on the XRPL mainnet.
Hot Take: Improving Interoperability for Xahau and XRPL
The launch of Xahau brings excitement to the crypto community, but it also highlights the need for improved interoperability with the XRP Ledger. Richard AH’s proposed amendment to XRPL’s mainnet could address some of these challenges by enabling reversed Burn2Mint for issued currencies. However, concerns have been raised by Ripple’s CTO regarding tracking Burn2Mint on the Xahau chain and potential forks. It remains to be seen if this proposal will gain support from mainnet validators amidst the complex dynamics of “mainnet politics.” Enhancing interoperability between Xahau and XRPL is crucial for unlocking the full potential of both chains and promoting seamless asset movement.
