Rising Chatgpt Popularity Leads to Alarming Surge in Compromised Accounts, Experts Warn

Singapore-based cybersecurity firm Group-IB has observed a significant increase in compromised accounts linked to the popular chatbot Chatgpt, with 101,134 infected devices identified over the past year. The compromised accounts were discovered within logs of info-stealing malware traded on darknet markets. The logs reached a peak of 26,802 in May 2023, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for 40.5% of the stolen accounts. Group-IB suggests that this rise in compromised accounts is indicative of the growing popularity of Chatgpt. Developed by Openai, Chatgpt has found applications in various fields, including software development and business communications. It has also been adopted in the crypto space, with Coinbase and Elliptic testing it for different purposes. Group-IB warns that unauthorized access to Chatgpt accounts can expose confidential information, which can then be exploited for targeted attacks against companies and their employees. The majority of logs containing Chatgpt accounts were breached by the Raccoon info stealer, collecting account credentials, bank card details, crypto wallet information, and data from browsers, instant messengers, and emails.
