Sam Bankman-Fried Transferred To Oklahoma
Sam Bankman-Fried, the co-founder of FTX crypto exchange, has been relocated to a temporary detention facility in Oklahoma, defying a federal judge’s order to keep him in New York to assist with his appeal.
According to reports, Bankman-Fried is currently being held at the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, as indicated on the Bureau of Prisons website. Last year, he spent the majority of his time preparing for his trial while being detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Legal Battle and Allegations
Judge Lewis Kaplan, who sentenced Bankman-Fried to 25 years in prison, suggested that he stay in Brooklyn until his appeal is fully reviewed to facilitate contact with his appellate lawyers.
Despite publicly stating his intention to appeal the conviction, Bankman-Fried formally objected to the decision in late April. In a post-conviction interview, he raised concerns about the fairness of his trial, specifically targeting Sullivan & Cromwell, the law firm representing FTX’s new owners.
- Bankman-Fried accused the firm of collaborating with the prosecution and hindering his access to crucial FTX documents shared with the prosecution.
- He claimed that this interference negatively impacted the trial, including media coverage and the defense’s ability to present favorable evidence.
Closer Ties to Family During Incarceration
With the appeal now submitted, Bankman-Fried is aiming for a different outcome, seeking a reduction in his sentence. He stressed the importance of introducing vital evidence and presenting key witnesses, which he alleges his defense was denied during the trial.
Mark Botnick, a spokesperson for Bankman-Fried, expressed appreciation for the court’s consideration and hoped that the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) would comply with the court’s recommendation to provide Bankman-Fried access to his appellate lawyers.
Possible Transfer to California
There are indications that Bankman-Fried could be moved to a prison closer to his family in California to serve the rest of his sentence. The Oklahoma facility, categorized as a transfer center by the Bureau of Prisons, is designed to house inmates for a limited period, usually four to six weeks.
The native token of the exchange, FTT, is currently valued at $1.59, showing minimal fluctuations compared to the previous day’s price, with a slight 1% decrease. However, the token has seen a significant 12% increase in price over the past month.
Hot Take
Despite facing legal challenges, Bankman-Fried remains hopeful and determined to navigate the legal landscape, pursue his appeal, and seek a favorable outcome. Stay tuned for further developments in this ongoing saga.
