Shanghai has unveiled the “Shanghai Action Plan for Creating a New Path in Metaverse Tourism (2023-2025)” to propel the development of metaverse tourism. The plan focuses on five key areas: “Digital Tourism Infrastructure,” “Technological Breakthroughs,” “New Metaverse Tourism Scenarios,” “Digital Art Platforms,” and “Immersive Interactive Content.” Shanghai aims to leverage its large-scale cultural and tourism consumer market, digital infrastructure, and creative resources to enhance its competitiveness in the digital era. The plan emphasizes embracing immersive technologies, spatial-temporal dimensions, and industrial transformations driven by new technologies.
Under the plan, Shanghai will accelerate the construction of network infrastructure, establish cloud platforms for the tourism industry, and promote edge computing capabilities. Collaborative research will be conducted on key areas like digital cultural rights protection and immersive interactions. Shanghai also plans to enhance metaverse tourism experiences by creating digital cultural scenes, digitizing cultural relics, and developing innovative performing arts products. The city will leverage its urban blockchain infrastructure to establish digital creative alliances and foster the development of digital content creation. The plan also encourages the convergence of innovative elements and the protection of digital copyrights.
During the Shanghai Metaverse Tourism Initiative event, Shanghai Immersion Opportunities Technology Development Co., Ltd. and Shanghai iQiyi New Media Technology Co., Ltd. showcased their advancements in metaverse technology applications and content production. They highlighted the successful implementation of the “Wind Rises in Luoyang” project, which integrates popular IPs and technological innovations in offline tourism experiences. Shanghai aims to replicate such projects nationwide to establish a model for modernized metaverse tourism.
Shanghai has also announced the “Three-Year Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of Manufacturing (2023-2025)” which highlights the metaverse as a crucial aspect of its vision.
