Forty Nations Pledge to Stop Paying Ransoms to Cybercriminals
To tackle the increasing menace of ransomware attacks, an alliance of forty nations is planning to sign a pledge committing to never pay ransoms to cybercriminals. These attacks have been on the rise globally, with the United States being hit particularly hard, accounting for 46% of all ransomware attacks.
Anne Neuberger, U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, emphasized the severity of the situation during a virtual briefing, stating that as long as money continues to flow to ransomware criminals, the problem will persist.
The International Counter Ransomware Initiative’s Strategies
The International Counter Ransomware Initiative aims to disrupt the funding mechanisms of cybercriminals by improving information sharing regarding ransom payments. Lithuania will establish one information-sharing platform, while Israel and the United Arab Emirates will jointly create another.
Partner countries will collaborate on developing a “black list” through the U.S. Department of Treasury. This list will include information about digital wallets used for transferring ransomware payments. Additionally, artificial intelligence will be utilized to analyze blockchain data and identify illicit funds.
Ransomware Crypto Payments Reach $449.1 Million in H1 2023
The significant increase in cryptocurrency payments made to ransomware attackers has intensified the need for action. According to a report from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, crypto payments to ransomware attackers totaled $449.1 million in the first half of 2023, marking a $175.8 million increase from the previous year. If this trend continues, ransomware attackers are on track for their second-best year on record.
