Sotheby’s Unveils Auction for Unique Collection of Bitcoin-Infused ‘Bitcoinshrooms’

Sotheby’s Unveils Bitcoinshrooms Ordinals Auction

Sotheby’s, the world’s oldest fine art auction house, is planning to host its first auction featuring Bitcoin-based Ordinal inscriptions. The online event will take place in December at Sotheby’s New York and will showcase an exclusive selection of “Bitcoinshrooms” from the Shroomtoshi’s Ordinals collection.

Sotheby’s Strategy to Offer NFT Assets

According to Michael Bouhanna, the lead for digital and contemporary art at Sotheby’s, the auction house will offer non-fungible token (NFT) assets created on the Bitcoin blockchain. These NFTs come from the “Bitcoinshrooms” Ordinals collection, which features an 8-bit artistic style created by digital artist Shroomtoshi.

The Bitcoinshrooms Auction

The Sotheby’s Bitcoinshrooms auction is currently ongoing and will conclude on December 13, 2023. The auction has attracted bids on all lots, with some exceeding their estimated prices. Bidders also have the option to purchase the Bitcoinshrooms NFTs using cryptocurrency.

Excitement Over the First Public Availability

Michael Bouhanna expressed his excitement about the first public availability of works from the highly anticipated Bitcoinshrooms collection. He sees it as a significant project and an opportunity for the public to own pieces from this unique collection.

The Collection’s Artwork and Value

The collection features three lots of 8-bit style images called Ordinals. One lot depicts a mushroom symbolizing “Self-Sovereignty,” another shows a mushroom with a crown representing the “Sovereign Individual,” and the final lot features an 8-bit representation of a BIP39 seed, echoing the theme of sovereignty. Sotheby’s estimates the value of each Ordinal in the Bitcoinshrooms collection to be between $20,000 and $30,000.

Interest in Ordinal Inscriptions

Ordinal inscriptions have garnered significant interest and sparked debates. Over 46.5 million of these inscriptions have been permanently embedded into the Bitcoin blockchain, with miners earning a total of 3,388 BTC from this phenomenon. Shroomtoshi views the Bitcoinshrooms collection as a visual summary of Bitcoin’s 13-year evolution.

A Recap of Bitcoin’s Evolution

The Bitcoinshrooms collection is described by the artist as a pixelated recap of Bitcoin’s first 13 years. It pays homage to 8-bit art while raising awareness about Bitcoin’s core principles and venting frustration at what the artist sees as its annoying pop elements and aberrations.

Hot Take: Sotheby’s Embraces NFTs with Bitcoin-Based Ordinals Auction

Sotheby’s, the renowned fine art auction house, has made its entry into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with its Bitcoinshrooms Ordinals auction.
