South Korean Lawyer Sentenced to Jail for Embezzling Client Money
A South Korean law firm operator has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for stealing clients’ money and using it to invest in cryptocurrencies. The lawyer, who remains unnamed, was found guilty of embezzling $170,000 from a corporate client on December 27, 2021. The money was supposed to be used for a real estate deal under a trust contract. However, the lawyer transferred the funds into their personal bank account and used them for personal purposes, specifically investing in cryptocurrencies.
No Recovery of Stolen Funds
Unfortunately, prosecutors were unable to retrieve any of the stolen funds. Despite the court’s efforts to hold the lawyer accountable, none of the money could be recovered. This factor played a role in the severity of the punishment handed down by Justice Jeong Soon-yeol of the District Court’s 11th Criminal Division.
Rise in Crypto-related Crime in Busan
Busan, a city in South Korea, has seen an increase in crypto-related crime recently. In December last year, police arrested over 80 suspected crypto scammers in the city. In January, the same division of the District Court sentenced a drug dealer who used cryptocurrencies as a payment tool to seven years in jail. Additionally, a district court in nearby Changwon imprisoned an individual for four years after they provided fake bank documents to a bogus crypto exchange.
