Stellar’s Protocol 20 Upgrade Causes No Impact on XLM Price Stability

Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) Delays Protocol 20 Upgrade

The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) has announced that it will delay the Protocol 20 upgrade. This decision was made after receiving input from developers and stakeholders in the ecosystem. SDF has chosen to disarm its validators, temporarily halting their ability to vote for the upgrade originally scheduled for January 30.

A Bug Causes the Delay

On January 25, SDF notified the community about a bug in Stellar Core v20.1.0 that could potentially affect applications and services using fee bumps for Soroban transactions after the upgrade. Despite assessing the bug as posing minimal risk, SDF sought input on how to proceed, ultimately leading to the decision to delay the upgrade.

SDF emphasized that upgrading the network is a collaborative effort and sought input from the Stellar Dev Discord and developer mailing list. The decision now lies with the validators as an open-source community. They can either proceed with the upgrade if a quorum is reached or maintain Protocol 19 if a quorum is not achieved.

XLM Price Remains Stable

Validators can choose to disarm their voting capabilities using a specific command in stellar-core. Despite the discussions surrounding the Protocol 20 upgrade, the market response has been muted. XLM, Stellar’s native cryptocurrency, is trading at $0.1159 with a slight increase of 0.2% in the last 24 hours and a 0.40% rise over the past week. The market impact on XLM’s price remains relatively stable, with a market capitalization of approximately $3.29 billion.

Hot Take: Stellar Delays Protocol 20 Upgrade Due to Bug

Stellar has decided to delay its Protocol 20 upgrade after discovering a bug in Stellar Core v20.1.0. Although the bug is considered to pose minimal risk, SDF sought input from the community before making a decision. This delay highlights the importance of collaboration and consensus in network upgrades. Despite the delay, the market response has been calm, with XLM’s price remaining stable. Validators now have the choice to proceed with the upgrade or maintain the current protocol. The future of Protocol 20 is in their hands as an open-source community.
