USPTO Drops Dogecoin Trademark Application
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has announced that it has abandoned the trademark application for ‘Dogecoin’ by the Dogecoin Foundation. The decision was made after the foundation failed to respond to an Office action within the given deadline.

An X user on Twitter shared a screenshot of an email from the USPTO, stating that the application had been dropped due to abandonment. The email, dated December 13, 2023, mentioned that the foundation had not provided a timely response to the Office action.
Hope for Reviving the Application
However, there is still a chance for the foundation to continue with the application. The USPTO explained in the email that if the foundation did not receive or intentionally delay their response to the Office action, they can file a petition to revive the application.
Revival Process and Fees
The revival petition would require a signature from someone with firsthand knowledge of the situation, stating that the delay was unintentional. The foundation would also need to respond to the Office action if they received it, or file a statement if they did not receive it. Additionally, they would have to pay a petition fee and an extension fee within two months.
Request for Reinstatement
If there was an error on the part of USPTO and the foundation did not abandon their application, they can file a ‘Request for Reinstatement’ along with proof of their claim. Unlike a petition for reinstatement, there is no fee associated with this request.

In August 2023, the USPTO initially refused the foundation’s Dogecoin trademark application, stating that it was too generic. This decision was welcomed by the Dogecoin community, which believes that Dogecoin should not be owned by anyone.
