A Challenging Year for the Video Game Industry
The video game industry faced numerous challenges in 2023, as highlighted in a report by Game Developer and the Game Developer Conference (GDC). The report emphasized the adversity and uncertainty experienced by developers due to technological disruptions, workplace instability, studio closures, and layoffs.
The State of the Game Industry in 2024
Research firm Omdia conducted the 2024 State of the Game Industry report, surveying 3,000 game developers. The report explored various aspects of their work and the video game industry as a whole.
Key Findings from the Report
The report revealed several key findings. While there was growth in accessibility options in games, developers expressed increased frustration with Twitter. Additionally, opinions were divided regarding returning to physical offices, and 56% of respondents expressed concerns about future layoffs.
The majority of respondents identified their roles as game design (34%) or working for independent studios (32%). Only 18% worked at AAA studios. Most developers reported working on games for PC (over 60%), followed by PlayStation 5 (35%) and Xbox Series X/S (34%).
Unity and Unreal Engine were the top game engines used by developers (both at 33%), while 14% used proprietary game engines.
While interest in Web3 games continued, overall interest in blockchain technology within the gaming industry decreased, with over 77% of developers expressing no interest.
The Impact of Generative AI
Following the launch of OpenAI’s GPT-4, artificial intelligence gained significant interest in 2023. Several game studios, including Blizzard Entertainment, Square Enix, and UbiSoft, utilized generative AI. However, Game Developer’s report revealed that 4 out of 5 developers had ethical concerns about AI.
Despite pushback from gamers, 31% of developers personally used generative AI, and 49% reported its usage within their companies. The majority of AI use was in “Business and Finance” (44%) and “Community Marketing and PR” (41%).
Indie studios were more likely to use generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Midjourney compared to AAA studios. The main purpose of AI usage among developers was coding assistance.
The Ethics Debate Surrounding AI
While some developers saw AI as beneficial for workflow optimization, others believed it had no place in the industry. About 18% of respondents felt that AI would harm the industry. Moreover, 84% of developers expressed concerns about the ethics of using generative AI.
