Optimism Network Testing Updated Security Response System
On February 15, the Optimism network will temporarily suspend ETH token withdrawals to test an upgraded security response system. During this one-hour pause, users will not be able to withdraw ETH from Optimism’s Level-2 network to the main Ethereum network, but deposits and regular transactions will continue unaffected.
Enhancing Security in the Optimism Ecosystem
The primary goal of this test is to strengthen the ability to respond to security incidents across various chains within the Optimism ecosystem. Currently, the incident response system includes an on-chain pause specifically for Ethereum withdrawals. The proposed upgrade introduces a Superchain-wide pause mechanism, enhancing protection for ERC-20 and ERC-721 token withdrawals.
Upgraded Features and System Fortification
OP Labs has proposed a protocol upgrade that incorporates insights from comprehensive incident response drills and industry expert input. The upgrade introduces a new SuperchainConfig contract and updates to the OptimismPortal and L1CrossDomainMessenger. These enhancements have been successfully operational on OP Sepolia since December 11, 2023.
Reviewing the Full Upgrade Proposal
Stakeholders are encouraged to review the full upgrade proposal, including the audit and impact assessment available in the Governance Proposal. The upgraded feature is currently being tested on Optimism’s testing network, and the one-hour withdrawal pause on February 15 will serve as a live environment check.
Optimism Network Overview
The Optimism blockchain is an ecosystem of Level-2 chains known as the Superchain, managed by the Optimism Collective DAO. It aims to reduce transaction costs for decentralized applications. OP Mainnet is the flagship network representing a fast, stable, and scalable L2 blockchain, and Optimism includes other L2 networks such as Base and Zora.
