Bitcoin Inventor Craig Wright Faces Setbacks in High-Profile Lawsuits
Craig Wright, the self-proclaimed inventor of Bitcoin, has encountered developments in two major lawsuits related to his claim of being Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of the cryptocurrency.
The UK Supreme Court Denies Appeal in Libel Lawsuit
In one case, the UK Supreme Court has denied Wright permission to appeal a ruling in his libel lawsuit against podcaster Peter McCormack. Wright had sued McCormack for disputing his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto, but the judges had previously awarded only £1 in damages.
Wright’s lawyers attempted to appeal twice before, arguing that the ruling failed to address the reputational harm caused by online attacks. However, the Supreme Court denied their final appeal attempt, confirming the nominal damages amount.
Ongoing Lawsuit Alleging Copyright Infringement
Meanwhile, Wright is also involved in an ongoing lawsuit against crypto companies and developers, accusing them of copyright infringement on Bitcoin intellectual property. However, the defendants have rejected a recent settlement offer from Wright.
The Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a group comprising crypto companies and protocol developers targeted by Wright’s lawsuit, swiftly rejected the offer. COPA cited inaccuracies and potential loopholes in the proposal that could lead to future legal action.
COPA Challenges Wright’s Evidence and Founder Status
COPA has also questioned the authenticity of Wright’s evidence by presenting expert testimonies alleging that some of his submitted legal documents are manipulated forgeries. They suspect the use of AI tools to fabricate support documents on demand.
This attack aims to undermine Wright’s claim of being Satoshi Nakamoto and weakens his position in the lawsuit. Despite having supporters who believe he created Bitcoin alone, Wright’s credibility has been tarnished by these setbacks.
Hot Take: Doubts Persist Over Craig Wright’s Claim as Bitcoin Creator
Craig Wright’s legal battles have dealt significant blows to his assertion of being the inventor of Bitcoin. With the denial of his appeal and the rejection of his settlement offer, doubts continue to surround his claims. The challenges to the authenticity of his evidence further weaken his position. While he still has supporters, Wright’s credibility is increasingly in question. As the lawsuits unfold, it remains uncertain whether he can prove himself as Satoshi Nakamoto or if his role in the creation of Bitcoin will be permanently disputed.
