Improbable Working on Infrastructure to Support 40,000 Players in the Metaverse

Metaverse technology startup Improbable is developing infrastructure that can accommodate up to 40,000 players simultaneously in the same virtual space. According to Improbable’s Chief Product Officer Rob Whitehead, this technology allows users to interact, see, and hear each other within the virtual environment, similar to a digital music festival experience. Whitehead mentioned that high-density events are a unique opportunity that currently exists primarily in the physical world. Improbable has been collaborating with sports and music companies on this project. While Whitehead did not disclose the name of the project, it shares similarities with Yuga Labs’ Bored Ape Yacht Club metaverse Otherside.

Improbable’s “Network of Metaverses”

The metaverse tests conducted by Otherside were built using Improbable’s MSquared (M²) creation suite, which includes a network, tech stack, and metaverse markup language (MML) for creating digital assets and experiences. CEO Herman Narula described their plans for a “network of metaverses” as an ambitious project. Additionally, Whitehead highlighted the concept of “metaverse skeuomorphism,” where virtual objects resemble their real-world counterparts. In the beginning stages of the metaverse, developers will focus on creating familiar experiences bridging the gap between reality and the virtual world. However, as users become more acquainted with the metaverse, new and innovative experiences will emerge.
