The Awakening: $24.88M in Bitcoin Emerges From 2012 Wallets

In a surprising turn of events, a collection of bitcoins from 2012 has been transferred for the first time in over 11 years. This brings the total number of “sleeping bitcoin” transactions from 2012 to nine in 2023. While it cannot be confirmed if there is a single owner, analysis suggests that it is likely the movement of a single entity based on clustering heuristics and acquisition dates. The initial transaction involved the transfer of 199.99 BTC from the address “1NmFy,” which was confirmed at block height 808,207. This transaction did not employ significant privacy measures.

The batch of 199.99 BTC was acquired on February 14, 2012. The second transaction consisted of 185.12 BTC, also obtained on February 14, 2012. The funds from the address “1DV45” were sent using minimal privacy techniques and confirmed three blocks later at block height 808,210.

The third set of transferred bitcoins was secured on July 12, 2012, when BTC was trading at $7.15 per coin. It originated from the address “1BXuj,” which sent 97.41 BTC and was confirmed at block height 808,212. The fourth batch of BTC came from “19UrN,” created on March 6, 2012, and transferred 276.22 BTC, confirmed at block height 808,213. Lastly, the fifth transaction from the 2012 wallet involved “1BBvb,” which moved 151.15 BTC and was created on July 20, 2012.

Tracking Sleeping Bitcoins

All five transactions were identified by btcparser.com’s blockchain tool, “btcparser1.” This tool is specifically designed to monitor the activity of sleeping bitcoin addresses and continuously observes the blockchain for any associated activity with 64,529 such addresses. In total, vintage bitcoin holders from 2012 have transferred a combined sum of 4,610.86 BTC worth $126.12 million through nine transactions in 2023.
