ATHDAOx: Exploring Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)
ATHDAOx, an event held in Athens, Greece, on Dec. 9 and 10, focused on discussing decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). The event aimed to bring together the local DAO-focused community and cover topics such as governance, legalities, community building, and security.
“One of the many other things that we wanted to achieve is to bring the vibes of a conference from abroad, like Breakpoint, to Greece and at scale.”
The organizers aimed to bridge the gap between developers and the community. They believed that physical meetups like this provide opportunities for beginners and those interested in blockchain to connect with industry leaders.
Prominent developers from Solana, Bankless DAO, ApeCoin, GrapeDAO, and more attended and supported the event.
The Importance of Educating on DAOs
Takisoul, one of the organizers, stressed the significance of educating and activating the local community about DAOs. Many people have limited knowledge about Web3 and DAOs and lack awareness of their transformative potential.
“Many are not aware of the wonderful ways Web3 and DAOs unlock human coordination. They are changing the way that we collaborate as groups and also instill a sense of ownership.”
The organizers hope that after ATHDAOx, more EVM communities will consider utilizing Solana DAO tooling for their applications. They also want to see more Greek-based teams participating in future hackathons.
Redefining Democracy and Governance
One of the core principles in the DAO community is reimagining governance structures for community-run projects. During a panel discussion at ATHDAOx, participants explored legal structures, policy issues, and the challenges facing DAOs.
One panelist emphasized that Athens, being the city that founded democracy, could play a leading role in advocating for DAO policy on a legal level.
Regarding governance, the panelists advised against blindly copying governance methods from other DAOs and encouraged exploration to find what suits each project’s needs.
“Find out what suits your needs, don’t copy and paste from what always works for another DAO.”
While achieving complete decentralization may be elusive, transparency was highlighted as a key element. One panelist pointed out that Bitcoin remains the only truly decentralized DAO.
Hot Take: Promoting DAO Awareness and Collaboration
The ATHDAOx event successfully brought together individuals interested in exploring the potential of DAOs. By educating the local community and fostering collaboration between developers and enthusiasts, ATHDAOx aims to accelerate the adoption and understanding of decentralized autonomous organizations. As the DAO movement gains momentum, events like ATHDAOx play a crucial role in shaping the future of blockchain technology and its impact on society.
